Life is hectic enough – it can be frustrating just trying to figure out if something is good for you or not. Is it free of junk or not?

Do you feel good about eating it or not?

Can you trust the source or not?  Uhhgg!

When it comes to clean proteins - we think we can help & want to earn your business.

As you continue to search for a farm you want to trust – I would like to offer you these 4 facts about Land Basket Farm and the foods we raise.

Farm Facts

Raised on Pasture. Period. Everything we produce really is pasture or forest raised because we believe in the power of pastured farming practices and the health benefits people gain by eating the animals those practices produce. The body of literature surrounding the benefits of pasture raised / grass fed animal products is vast.

Non- GMO at a minimum. All Land Basket Farm Products are at least non-GMO fed from Resaca Sun Mill in Georgia.  We also offer corn and soy free in chicken as well.

It is clean. Period. All our products are free of hormones, steroids, antibiotics, and new vaccines. If an animal gets an antibiotic shot, it is sold in other than retail channels.

Health and Food Safety is # 1. The lens in which we evaluate every product or new idea is through you and your family’s health & safety benefit. Earned trust is a deliberate activity.

What we offer.

Pasture Raised Fresh Eggs. Egg mobiles are converted hay wagons and the girls are moved every 14 days. Non-GMO fed and dedicated guard dogs.

Pasture Raised Chicken. Our meat birds have a dedicated 10-acre river bottom where we also raise hay. We raise birds from April to October. Birds get a new patch of grass daily and are supplementally fed a Non-GMO or a corn and soy free feed. Dedicated guard dogs.

Pasture Raised Turkey. Our river bottom also supports a round of Turkeys for Thanksgiving. Also, Non- GMO fed and sometimes corn and soy free.

Forest Raised Pork. Our farm has several wood lots, mostly hardwoods. Our pigs are rotated to new forest paddocks every 2 weeks. We raise hogs almost year-round. Free choice fed a non-GMO feed (and lots of acorns too)

Partner Farms and other people we have faith in.

In the direct sell farm business, we want to provide families with good clean proteins, but we cannot do everything, so we seek partners with shared values.

Kipland Ridge Black Angus Beef.  Pasture Raised; commodity grain finished.  For years we have sought a Beef partner we have confidence in.  3 years ago, we started buying quarter shares of beef from Kelly and Matt Goble in Talbott Tn for our own family freezer.

We have always been happy with the quality and packaging. In 2023 we shook hands on a partnering trial run. We buy her animals and offer them to our clients – helping us and our clients with another protein choice.

Kelly has scrupulous protocols for her animals and although it is not 100% grass fed like some folks want, we think it is a quality product recommend it to those who want a little grain finishing in their beef.

We acknowledge that Grass fed is the highest standard we can achieve in the health category – but are not there yet. We continue to seek a grass fed option for our clients.

Field of Dreams Farm in Franklin Tn.

We have been friends with the Simpsons since we met them at a Pick Tennessee conference a few years ago. Chris farms regeneratively like we do. Chris’ daughter Mellissa fishes commercially for a living and owns a small Seafood Shipping business. Through Melissa – we sometimes gain access to wild caught, sushi grade seafood a couple of times a year.

A you go forward in your search for a farm, please know that I am available to you to answer any question you have – big or small.  You can do that via email  or call or text me at 423.202.4924.

Respectfully,

Farmer Kevin

A Change of Seasons

A Change of Seasons As fall descends upon us with all its glory, leaves of every color fall from the trees and paint the landscape …… the event marks the end of a season well lived and there begins a new season after winter’s rebirth. I recall almost 40 years ago sitting in Botany class learning about how leaves change color and fall from the tree…. The abscission layer – a layer of cells that form in the leaf stem eventually separating the leaf from the life blood of the tree…..& it eventually falls.    Losing Cathy almost 2 years ago was my abscission layer - the beginning of an end……… the end of a beautiful season of life. This will be Land Basket Farm’s final season of operation. I will sale this farm this year or next and likely end up in Texas.  What will I do ?  I will continue to blog & be an advocate for healthier living, I will travel, enjoy the outdoors, run races and be apart of my grandchildren’s lives.  Some of you will look upon this event with sadness, but you should not. It is a change in seasons and comes in many forms for all of us. The era of Land Basket Farm will always bring a smile to my face – the work that Cathy and I did together and the people we connected with along the way. I will miss it all.  Our Final Season and what to expect   We have significant inventory on hand and operations will continue normally through December. Read the newsletters. We will continue attending the Knoxville Market for the rest of this year. Our last market will be December 19. We will not attend the winter market in January, Feb & March. On Farm pick up will be the only fulfillment option in January 2027. I anticipate the website will close ~ Late January depending on sales. We’ll offer more frequent specials this fall. Read the newsletters. The Next Season—and This Blog My most loyal readers know I am passionate about living longer and healthier lives. I am a crusader against sugar and many of the modern aspects of our diet that do not serve us. If you have enjoyed the Land Basket Blog, its journey, and its advocacy, I invite you to join me in the next season: Phase III Life. Finding Health and Happiness Later in Life.   Phase III Life is my new blog that will continue what Land Basket started (all content has been transferred). I will continue write about the things that affect our health, and shed light on topics that help us as we age.   Thank you for being part of this season. I hope you’ll join me for the next.
